On this day, 25 years ago a classic was born. Super Mario Kart came out back in 1992, and single handedly made its own kind of genre. There had been racing games, but nothing like kart racing was. We got vibrant characters, colours, tracks, terrain, and awesome Mode 7 graphics. If there needed to be a hit besides Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart was it. I’m 29 now, so this takes me back as I remember how advanced it was, even as such a young child. The series has had iteration after iteration as new consoles and handhelds have come out over the years, and there are signs of slowdown, much less physics getting in the way. We can now go under water, cruise in space, even go upside down and sideways.
Gems like these are why Nintendo will always hold a place in me, no matter how old I get. If you ever get a chance, play the original. If you can’t go that far back out of the need for fancy graphics, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was a launch title for the Nintendo Switch. No matter what, have a blast with friends and family and kart away!
